The Assemblyman for the Kumblingo/Bolingo Electoral Area in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, Stephen Abelimah Akugre is worried that left unchecked, many parts of the Electoral Area would become unpassable after dark due to the rampant robberies in the area.

Stephen Abelimah Akugre, the Assemblyman for the area shared these concerns when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, September 26, 2022.

“It is life-threatening. If you look at the crime in my community, it is so alarming. When you are passing through the chief’s palace to the Naaga road, you cannot ride motors there,” he said.

The problem, Mr. Akugre explained has been exacerbated by the rapid expansion of mining activities in the area.

“They [miners] will pounce on them [innocent bystanders] and make sure they take everything away from them. These operators know the bush very well. When they snatch your motorbike, there is no way you can get it back.”

“As for the stealing, even in our communities, they [the thieves] have now moved into the communities to operate,” he said.

The Assemblyman who spoke about the issue is a victim of bike thefts in the area. “My personal motorking, a brand new one I bought was stolen just by my house,” he said.

To help improve security in the area, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Isaac Adongo is constructing a modern police station for the Sherigu community in the Bolgatanga Municipality.

The facility, which is about 85 percent complete, comprises a juvenal cell, a male cell, and a female cell with washrooms attached.

Again, the facility contains 3 offices and washrooms for a station officer, CIDs, and other police officers that will be posted there upon completion. The police station has a front counter that will serve as the first point of contact for public visiting and armouring for storage of ammunition.
