Disunity among ethnic groups in Upper East Region retarding development – Tangoba Abayage

According to former Upper East Regional Minister Tangoba Abayage, tribalism is the main obstacle to progress in the region. The region would continue to be underdeveloped until a moment when it can concentrate on regional development other than basic ethnocentric attitudes.

Madam Tangoba said this when she spoke on the Day Break Upper East Show, Friday, October 7, 2022.

“Disunity, tribal sentiments, unnecessary feuding over unproductive lands. We do not seem to agree with each other on the way forward towards the development of this region. We are so inward-looking and self-centred. Once it is not about us, we just do not care.”

“This region, in time past, was the second smallest and yet this region happens to have the largest collection of ethnic groups. Each ethnic group wants to be so individual. We don’t collectively think about the welfare of this collective region. We fight over unnecessary things. We scramble over opportunities that will come.”

“Sometimes in our hearts of hearts, we do not even wish well for each other. We wish one person will fail so that we say, you see, he couldn’t do it,” she argued.

The Ambassador to Italy suggested that because of the obvious disunity amongst the ethnic groups in the region, it is difficult for the traditional leaders to demand what is due them, in the area of development, from political leaders.

“The politicians take us for granted. It is as simple as that. If you don’t come together to fight for what you want, and then we are bringing it and one says no you can’t send it here and another says no, you can’t send it here [it wouldn’t happen]. Look at the airport. We sat and fought over the location of the airport,” she recounted.
