Bakeries in Upper West Region are shutting down over high operating costs

The Chairman of Upper West Bread Bakers Association, Isaac Suneo has revealed that some bakeries in the region have shut down their operations due to the increasing cost of production.

Speaking on the Day Break Upper East Show, Isaac Suneo explained that the high cost of production has forced bakers to lay-off some of their workers.

“We have been forced to lay off our workers because we cannot afford to pay them anymore. Imagine a baker who used to bake 10 bags a day is even managing to bake 1 bag, how do you pay your workers? I can tell you a lot of bakers have stopped work, a lot of them in the Upper West Region. When you wake up every morning, calls come, how do we go about this, how do we do this, many of them have stopped.”

Due to the high cost of production, the Association in the last few days has reviewed the prices of bread with a minimum size selling at Ȼ6.00.

“We have started that on Monday because it is just the way to go. The least you can get now is going for Ȼ6.00 and the other ones; it depends on your pocket, you can get as high as Ȼ20.00.”

Mr Suneo said that “a lot of people have stopped taking bread; they have taken bread to be like a rich man’s food now. It hasn’t become like a household kind of food now. Many of our customers or consumers have stopped taking bread because they can’t afford it any more”.
