Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, the Chiana Pio has renewed his request for the government to create a separate district for the west zone of the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region. According to Chiana Pio, the request for a separate district resurfaced before the 2012 general elections which led to the Electoral Commission establishing a two-man committee to study the issue.

The chief regretted that the long-standing demand for a separate district for the west zone failed to materialise after a committee’s finding was submitted to the government for consideration.

“Since the submission of this report, nothing concrete has been done. We are however requesting government after government to create a separate district for the west zone of the present Kassena-Nankana West District”

Pe Ayagitam III made this appeal during the 12th anniversary of the annual Fao festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of the Chiana traditional area.

The chief mentioned that the creation of a separate district for the west zone will bring governance closer to the people and as well create opportunities for the people.

“We continue to make the demand for the simple reason that the area is geographically inappropriate for it to be administratively linked to Paga. We in the west zone consider the present arrangements of the Kassena-Nankana West District as upsurged. It defies logical reasoning to have a Kassena-Nankana West as a name and yet have the capital in the north. We do not even want to talk of the inaccessibility of Paga to areas in the west zone”, he stated.

The paramount chief of the Chiana traditional area has therefore implored the current government “to correct the abnormalities” and grant their request before the 2024 general election.

Pe Ayagitam III used the occasion to plead with the government to ensure that the contractor working on the Chuchuliga-Tumu Road return to the site and complete the road for easy accessibility.

The chief also made an appeal for the government to complete some stalled structures at the Chiana Senior High School to improve teaching and learning.

“The upgrading of the Chiana Health Center into a polyclinic is another area of concern to us in the west zone. Such a step will ease the burden of people travelling to Navrongo, Sandema, or even Paga to seek medical attention”

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu called for collective efforts from the people of the region to help develop the region. While commending the security services in the region for efforts at maintaining peace, Mr. Yakubu entreated residents of the region to report suspected terrorists to the security bodies for action taken.

He said the government under president Akufo-Addo is working seriously to bridge the development gap of the northern sector of the country to the south.
