President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, the Chiana Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III has called on Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku to smoke the peace pipe for peaceful coexistence to return to the area.

“I would like on this occasion, as president of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, to call on the warring factions to dedicate 2023 as a year for the consolidation of peace. Smoking the peace pipe and bringing calm and tranquillity to this once vibrant town should be your primary objective throughout the year.”

The intermarrying tribes, Kusasi and Mamprusi over a decade have engaged in a protracted conflict over the rightful owners of Bawku. A conflict that has led to the loss of many lives and properties in the area. And as a result, the one-time business hub in the Upper East Region is gradually turning into a ‘ghost’ town anytime the conflict resurfaces its ugly face.

Pe Ayagitam bemoaned that the Bawku interethnic conflict has come to sully the image of the Upper East Region that was known as a “haven for peace and tranquillity”.

Pe Ayagitam III made this appeal during the 12th anniversary of the annual Fao festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of the Chiana traditional area.

He commended the security services for their effort at restoring peace in the area. The president of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs also commended the chief of Sirigu, Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III, and his mediating team for bringing stability to the Doba/Kandiga land dispute.
