The Upper East Regional Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region, Peter Aynibisa Ayamga, has disclosed that the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, led by the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, is in the dark as to why the contractor working on the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polmakom road, Queiroz Galvao MI, had packed out of site.

“I am saying to you that the Regional Engineer is saying that the contractor has not written to him, or the department or to the Ministry explaining why he is not on site. He has not done same to the regional coordinating council. So it is not for me,” he said.

Mr. Ayinbisa contends that the contractor’s absence from the scene does not necessarily imply a lack of funding.

“I cannot be said that once the contractor is not available on site, it is about payment issues or about debt restructuring,” he said.

It would be proper for no assumptions to be made about the contractor’s absence, Mr. Ayinbisa said.

“It cannot be assumed. Material shortage could cause a contractor to move from site. It could be one of the reasons.”

The authorities have however began reaching out the consultant and contractor to allow for explanation why the road has been abandoned.

“The Regional Minister has indicated to me that they’re doing follow ups to the contractor, the consultant. As we speak now, they are making attempts to reach out to the consultant to find out why he left site. The fact remains that once the contractor and consultant has not written officially to the Ministry or to the RCC or to the Regional Director of Highways, you cannot conclude that his absence on site is as a result of A, B or C.,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional NDC has taken the government to task over the road project

“We believe that if President Akufo-Addo cuts down the needless expenditure through reduction of the size of his government, suspension of the needless National Cathedral project, and eschew the unbridled profligacy, it will make enough savings to complete essential projects such as the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom road, the Navrongo-Naaga road, the Chuchuliga-Sandema-Fumbisi-Wiesi road, Missiga-Kulungungu road project among others.”

The National Democratic Congress, led by its Regional Communication Officer, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, shared these sentiments when it held the maiden edition of its “Upper East Region Must Know’ series today, February 21, 2023 at the party’s Regional Office in Zuarungu.

The government led by Akufo-Addo should bear full responsibility for the current economic condition the nation is in, according to Mr. Abdallah Salifu. The Bolga-Bawku road has been impacted by the government’s unnecessary borrowing and pursuit of superfluous expenditure.
