The protracted conflict in Bawku is driving persons affected by the conflict to find solace in some other districts and municipalities in the Upper East Region. One of such districts is the Bolgatanga East District.
The DCE for the area, David Amoah, speaking to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, Monday, July 10, 2023, explained that the situation is leading to the rapid development of the Bolgatanga East District.
While the rapid development means the expansion of economic activities in the area that will lead to increased revenue for the Assembly, The DCE, Mr. Amoah added that the downside of the rapid development is the overburdening of the district assembly’s finances and staffing.
“Being a new district, there’s a lot of things that we need to be doing. You know, resources are not abundant to carry out everything at the same time. We are taking one step after the other.”
“Bolga East is an area that has a transit movement from the East to the central point and then from the central point to the east. Bolga East is coming up very strongly because of the conflict in Bawku and other areas. A lot of people have moved in. The population is exploding seriously. Private development is coming up strongly. Everyday, it is like new people are coming,” he said.
Mr. Amoah explained that the situation has both positives and negatives.
“It is both a good and bad thing. It is very good for business but bad for planning. You have to keep updating your plans because if they are not up to task, they can clearly crowd out your plans,” he said.
