The Management of the National Service Scheme has secured government approval for the upward adjustment of the monthly allowance for National Service personnel from Ghc559.04 to GH715.57.
This was contained in a letter dated July 18, 2023, and signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare, as a result of a series of engagements between the National Service Scheme, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Ministry of Finance.
The Upper East Regional President of the National Service Personnel Association, Mr. Stephen Azung, speaking on A1 radio’s ‘Day Break Upper East Show with Mark Smith, noted that the increment followed a continuous demand by service personnel, who deemed the previous GH559 as inadequate to meet their basic needs.
According to him, the increment could only be considered good due to the current state of the country’s economy.
For this increment, all National service personnel who are currently in active service to the nation are entitled to the arrears for the difference in the upward adjustment from January 2023 and would be paid accordingly.
National service personnel are therefore urged to exercise patience as the necessary administrative processes are being concluded.
While some personnel may consider this 22% increment as meagre due to the cost of basic needs, including food items, as a result of inflation, they could only hope for a better increment in the near future for those yet to offer their service to the country.
