Greed, corruption pushing country’s economy to a ditch – Navrongo MP

The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central in the Upper East Region, Sampson Tangombu, has indicated that if Ghana properly utilised its vast natural resources and compared them to other countries, borrowing and seeking grants from foreign countries could have been a thing of the past.

However, Mr. Tangombu expressed concern that greed, corruption, selfishness, and lack of commitment among some NPP appointees have led the country into a ditch. His remarks highlight the missed opportunities and mismanagement that have hindered Ghana from fully leveraging its own resources for sustainable development.

He noted “who would have thought that a Sanitation minister will have such an amount of physical cash in his house? Now, imagine those who are in the financial sector, land and natural Resources, telecommunication sector, the amount that they will be having. The country is blessed just because some group of people based on their agenda are milking it dry.”

Mr. Tangombu made this known on NEWSLINK on A1 Radio regarding the brouhaha surrounding the former sanitation minister Cecilia Dapaah’s wealth. The ex-minister had her $1 million, €300,000 and several millions of Ghana cedis stolen from her Abelemkpe residence by her domestic help.

He suggested that “We need to begin pushing for independent structures that have the Ghanaian youth at heart and can fight for the country devoid of politics. Prosecute and confiscate individuals’ properties without favour or kind when they are involved in corrupt acts. The country cannot continue to be this way.”

Mr. Tangombu therefore lauded the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for showing interest in the matter, adding that “more investigation should be extended to those at the heart of the country’s economy especially those who are at the Ministry of Finance.”
