A municipal health promotion officer, Francisca Adongo, has called on men to help their partners in the battle against breast cancer by sucking their breasts and encouraging them to constantly go for breast screening to enable them detect early signs of the disease for better chances of treatment.

“Men are invited to help us, the women, fight this deadly breast cancer disease, and you can help us through the sucking of our breasts and encouraging us to have our breasts screened”, she stated.

She advised that women who notice some kind of unusual feeling, irritation, color change, discharges, or symptoms on their breasts or have their erected nipples inverted should seek medical care for further investigation.

She revealed this when she spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio`s Daybreak Upper East show on breast cancer.

Ms. Gifty C. Damsongor, a public health nurse who was also on the show with her, explained that breast cancer is a deadly disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control and can come in different forms depending on which cell in the breast turns into cancer, but can mostly begin in the ducts or lobules. She noted that breast cancer could be treated or otherwise depending on the stage, adding that “if it is detected early, there are certain things that can be done, including amputating the affected part if it hasn’t affected other parts or giving drugs to kill the calcium cells.”

Ms. Dansongor, however, bemoaned that most people always report to hospitals when the situation has escalated and called on women to do regular screening.

As part of the breast cancer awareness month, the health officials said a team from Komfo Anokye Hospital would be in the Regional Hospital this Saturday and Sunday to help screen women.

They added that they would also be going to schools and markets to sensitize women about breast cancer.
