Member of Parliament (MP) for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, has taken a strong exception to comments made by the Presidential Flag Bearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, regarding the procurement of dialysis machines for the Upper East Regional Hospital.
The aspiring flag bearer, during his tour in the region, questioned why MPs in the Upper East Region have failed to contribute towards the purchase of dialysis machines for the regional hospital despite the crucial need.
According to the Dr. Nawaane, Mr. Agyapong should redirect his questions to the Minister of Health and inquire about the billions of cedis that have been borrowed to refurbish the health sector.
Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East Show, Dr. Nawaane emphasised the need for accountability in the healthcare system, urging Mr. Aygapong to investigate why the existing dialysis unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is not adequately attending to out-patient cases.
Dr. Nawaane stated, “We, as MPs in the Upper East Region, cannot be expected to use our scanty common fund to purchase dialysis machines when some health facilities at various district levels lack basic equipment such as weighing scales, BP apparatus, thermometers, chairs, and tables. Our priority should be the equitable distribution of healthcare resources to benefit the masses.”
The lack of dialysis machines has been a longstanding issue, with patients in need of dialysis often forced to travel long distances for treatment. Dr. Nawaane, however, assured that efforts were underway to address the regional hospital’s pressing needs.”
