The Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Elvis Atia Awonekai, has expressed deep concerns about the posturing and what has been described as careless statements by NDC MP for Bolga, Isaac Adongo.
When the NPP PC, Mr. Awonekai, spoke to Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, he recalled some comments that were made by the MP, suggesting that Mr. Adongo was confident he would be the MP for the area until he decided otherwise and would then bring someone to take over from him. This implied that no other candidate but him, Mr. Adongo, was worthy of the seat.
Mr. Awonekai expressed utter disgust, saying, “somebody told him that the NPP primaries were coming up, and he said he would be MP until he wanted no more and then bring someone to take over from him. You cannot be this arrogant. You cannot make this careless statement. You cannot say that.”
“Everything that has a beginning always has an end. I never expected him to say that,” he added.
Elvis Atia Awonekai polled 618 out of the possible 794 votes in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency. It would be recalled that the NPP in the Upper East Region conducted primaries in 10 constituencies: Bolgatanga Central, Builsa South, Navrongo, Chiana-Paga, Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam, Zebila, Garu, and Tempane constituencies.
In three constituencies, namely Pusiga, Bolgatanga East, and Builsa North Constituencies, candidates went unopposed.
Elections are currently on hold in the Bawku Central Constituency.
Mr. Awonekai suggested that the NDC was not fair to Thomas Akurugu, who had earlier expressed interest in contesting the parliamentary primaries for the NDC in the Bolgatanga Central area.
“The NDC didn’t do well. They should have allowed Akurugu to contest like they did in Bongo. Who would have thought that Edward Bawa would have lost that particular seat? I can tell you that if Thomas would have contested Isaac Adongo in Bolga, Isaac would have been a goner by now.”
