The Assistant Director of Prison in charge of the Navrongo Prisons, ADP Yakubu Ibrahim Abugrago, is appealing to the general public to donate food items to support the feeding of inmates at the Navrongo prison.
The Navrongo prison, aside from its congested nature, faces inadequate feeding, which is a concerning situation for the management and officers at the prison service all the time.
Speaking to the media, ADP Yakubu said, the Ghc.1.80 pesewas per prisoner is woefully inadequate, coupled with the high cost of food produce in the market, making the feeding of inmates in the prison extremely difficult.
ADP Yakubu believes the government cannot do it alone; hence, there is a need for individuals, organizations, religious groups, among others, to help with any support.
“Government alone cannot do it, and what we have been given to take care of them we can’t use it to feed them. All of us know the amount given to us to feed them is Ghc.1.80 pesewas. People with wives and children outside there, how can you use such an amount to feed them? Currently, prices of food are skyrocketing; you can’t buy rice at contract prices, and it is these donations we are using. So, we appreciate donations of this nature,” he said.
The Assistant Director of Prison in the region made these remarks when the Ahmadiyya Muslim Lawyers Association of Ghana (AMLAG) donated some food items, including water, rice, oil, and soft drinks to the Navrongo prisoners after they freed six inmates from the prison as part of their corporate responsibility.
The Assistant Director of Prison in the region, ADP Yakubu Ibrahim, also called on people whose relatives are in prison to visit them and avoid neglecting them. According to ADP, some of the inmates have been there without a visit from family members for over years.
