Elvis Atia Awonekai, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for the Bolgatanga Central constituency, has donated a sum of 5,000 cedis to the management of the Upper East Regional Hospital. The donation is intended to support the establishment of a much-needed dialysis unit at the hospital, addressing a critical gap in healthcare services in the region.
With a population of over 1 million inhabitants in the region, the hospital receives cases from the North East region and neighboring Burkina Faso and Togo. However, with an increasing number of kidney cases recorded, patients in the region are compelled to travel to Tamale or Kumasi for dialysis treatment.
Coupled with the risk of traveling and the cost involved, residents of the region in March 2023 launched a campaign to raise funds towards to establishment of the project. Since then, organizations and individuals have donated towards the project.
The recent to join the list of donors is the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Bolgatanga Central constituency, Elvis Atiah Awonekai. Speaking about his donation, Mr. Awonekai said before he was elected the parliamentary candidate, he was able to influence three NPP parliamentary candidates, using his capacity as the party’s Regional Secretary, who in turn, donated towards the worthy course.
“Subsequently, after becoming a parliamentary candidate, I decided to come and donate GHC5,000 towards the project. It is so sad when you see and read the condition under which people move from the Upper East to other regions for dialysis service,” he stated.
In addition to the financial donation, Mr. Awonekai also pledged to donate 20 streetlight bulbs to illuminate the hospital quarters, enhancing safety and security for patients, staff, and visitors during the night.
Elvis Atia Awonekai’s connection to the hospital runs deep, as he was once a staff member of the hospital, occupying positions such as NHIS Claims Manager, Health Service Workers Union Branch Chairman of the Regional Hospital, Upper East NEC Member of Health Services Workers Union, and Head of Revenue at the Regional Hospital.
In addressing healthcare challenges, the NPP PC emphasized the need for public-private partnerships and community involvement and pledged to continue supporting initiatives that promote access to quality healthcare in the region.
Management of the hospital thanked the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Bolgatanga Central constituency for the donation.
