The main auditorium of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East region was ravaged by fire in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Bolgatanga District Pastor of the church, Reverend Robert Awuah, said it was around 4:30 AM on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, that someone ran to his residence to inform him about the fire incident in the church. He said, when he got to the church, the whole auditorium was full of smoke, then they started making calls to the Ghana Fire Service.
According to him, when the firefighters got to the scene, it took them about an hour or more to bring the fire under control, after which everything in the church was already burned to ashes. These include chairs, tables, sound systems, a motorbike, the entire ceiling, and the carpet, among others.
The District Pastor, Rev. Awuah, who is completely traumatized, said, as it stands, they do not know the cause of the fire because the church was closed after the Monday evening service. He said the church is only waiting for the fire service, who are currently investigating the possible cause of the fire, to come out with their report.
“When the fire service got here, the whole place was dark, and they struggled to put the fire off for about an hour. So we realized that there is nothing in the church that can be used again; everything was completely destroyed. Our chairs, tables, sound systems, motorbike, and many other things, so it is very difficult,” he said.
Speaking to the A1 News team who visited the church, while the leadership of the church is working hard to restore the damages and put the house of the Lord back in good shape, Rev. Awuah is appealing to individuals, organizations, and the general public to come to their aid with any support.
“We are appealing to all those people whom God has blessed to help us reshape and put the place in order. Because it is our plan that at least we should put the place back in good shape, but you know, for now, the money is not there.”
One thing that would surprise many was the fact that upon anything burnable being burned, a Bible that was placed on the altar table was not touched by the fire. Meanwhile, the entirety of the table was burned to ashes.
