The Upper East Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has come to the defense of the party’s performance, stating that any excess expenditure mentioned by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Country Director is for the benefit of the country.

The IMF Country Director, Kristalina Georgieva, has attributed Ghana’s recent economic challenges to, among other factors, imprudent fiscal behavior during the 2020 election period.

Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East show, Lawyer Namoo says even if there were excess expenditures, those were capital projects that could benefit the country in the future.

He said, “We are all passionate about development. So when you are talking about overspending, you overspend on what? If you are doing development projects, you are building hospitals. Look at the number of people who come out as nurses. Where are they going to be placed? The people go, acquire skills, but the facilities are not there for them to deploy their skills, and you get to work and become disillusioned. That’s why we have the Agenda 111 hospitals, so that when the nursing trainees come out of college, they can be immediately deployed there. So when the IMF says that we are overspending, they have to also look at it in light of the fact that you are doing it so that in the future, the dividend that it will yield will be massive for all of us.”
