Chief of Kandiga celebrates 50-year rule; call for paramountcy status

The chief of the Kandiga traditional area in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, Naba Henry Abawine Amenga-Etego II, celebrated his 50th anniversary of enskinnment over the weekend.

Celebrating the gains he made as chief of Kandiga, Naba Amenga-Etego called on the President and the entire Upper East Regional House of Chiefs to urgently upgrade the Kandiga traditional area to a paramountcy status for more development.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebration under the theme, “50 Years of Selfless and Charismatic Leadership: Consolidating our Unity and Strengths for Holistic Development,” Naba Amenga-Etego II stated that it would be a great honor to him and his people if the regional house of chiefs acted on his pending application for paramountcy status.

Dr. Wilfred Akapanga read the speech on behalf of the Chief at the Kandiga Chief’s palace, where the colorful Golden Jubilee celebration took place on Saturday, April 6th, 2024.

“I also want to particularly acknowledge and appreciate the presence of the President and Vice President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs. Your support for me and my people has been immeasurable. However, I wish to make a special appeal to the regional house of chiefs through my Paramount Chief, Mirigu Naaba, and Chiana Pio, the President, as well as the registrar, to expedite action on our application pending before them for the elevation of Kandiga to Paramountcy status. This will be a great honor done to me and my people on this golden jubilee.”

The President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Chiana Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, applauded the Chief of Kandiga for the achievements he has made over the 50 years as chief of the area. The Chiana Paramount Chief used the opportunity to call on the government to help address the numerous developmental needs of the people of the Upper East Region, which include bad road networks, as well as resolving the long-standing Bawku conflict.

Pe Ayagitam III also assured Naba Amenga-Etego II of his outfit’s commitment to taking action on all applications before his desk concerning paramountcy at the appropriate time.

Professor Joshua Alabi, the National Campaign Manager for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 general election, who represented former President John Dramani Mahama at the 50th celebration, praised the Kandiga Chief for his selfless leadership leading to the development of the area over the years. Prof. Alabi pledged the former President’s commitment to continue working with the Chief and his people. Prof. Alabi’s delegation to Naba Amenga-Etego II’s Golden Jubilee celebration donated an amount of GHC 16,500.00, which the parliamentary candidate for the NDC in the Chiana–Paga constituency, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, added GHC 500.00 to, making a total of GHC 17,000.00.

The Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, Gerard Ataogye, who represented himself, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, and the entire New Patriotic Party (NPP), also congratulated the Chief of the Kandiga traditional area for his commitment to the development of the area in all sectors. Mr. Ataogye assured the Chief and his people of the NPP’s commitment to addressing the challenges the community is currently facing under the leadership of the party’s Presidential Candidate for the December election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Meanwhile, the NPP delegation led by the Kassena-Nankana West DCE also supported the celebration with an amount of GHC 18,000.00 announced by the NPP parliamentary candidate for Chiana-Paga, Robert Aloo.
