PM election: Assembly Members realised need to ‘give and take’ – Rex Asanga

The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly recently elected Stephen Abelimah Akugre, the Assembly Member for the Kumblingo/Bolingo Electoral Area, as the Presiding Member.

After the tenure of the former Presiding Member, Rawfield Nyaaba Abileo, the Assembly failed several times to elect a Presiding Member, and that Assembly was later dissolved without one.

Since the inception of the new Assembly late last year, it also failed numerous times to elect a Presiding Member.

However, on June 13, 2024, members of the assembly came to an agreement on the need to elect a Presiding Member.

Out of a total of 41 Assembly Members, with 40 having voting rights, Mr. Akugre, who was the only member nominated, polled 32 yes votes, while two voted no, and 6 members were absent.

When the MCE for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga, spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show after the election, he said the assembly members had realized the need for a “give and take” to make matters work.

“The entrenched positions that they took did not help matters. This time, they realized they needed to give away something, and others had to sacrifice something. That is what worked. I think they were also getting fed up with being tagged as an Assembly that cannot even elect their own as a presiding member,” he said.

Mr. Asanga continued to say, “Now, the Assembly is complete.” This, he said, means the processes within the assembly can run smoothly.

On the day of the election, the subcommittees were inaugurated, and work is expected to begin.
