After months of fundraising, construction, retraining of health professionals, and the purchase of materials, the Upper East Regional Dialysis Centre is ready for use. This is according to the Lead Convenor for the advocacy to get the centre for the region, Dr. Emmanuel Akatibo.
Dr. Akatibo revealed this when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, June 21, 2024.
“We had some setbacks when we set up the dates to begin the processes. Thank God, now, almost all those setbacks have been corrected and we are good to go. We will officially start on the 26th of the month, that is Wednesday. We will start dialysis sessions.”
“On Monday and Tuesday, we have a team that is coming to help our nurses out as we test run the machines, and then on Wednesday, God willing, we will start our first hemodialysis process at the centre,” he said.
The team expected on Monday and Tuesday is supposed to help already trained health providers refresh their minds on what they learned.
“The training happened in November because we were expected to kick off in December. Unfortunately, we had many setbacks. It has been almost 6 months, so most of the skills acquired may have been lost. We need the dialysis nurses and one of the engineers they trained with to come and help them with the processes. Whatever skills they might have forgotten, they would be reminded of.”
“Wednesday, we will put patients on the machines,” he said.
According to Dr. Akatibo, patients who seek the services of the dialysis centre must reach out and be scheduled to enable them to get adequate services.
The fees for the services would be made public before Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
