The General Assembly of the Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) Students Representative Council (SRC) has held a session to demand accountability from the SRC executives.

The accountability sitting, which was attended by the SRC executives and members of the assembly, aimed to scrutinize the executives’ stewardship and assess their performance since assuming office.

According to Duut Stephen Dambe, the Speaker of the SRC parliament, the motive behind the sitting is for the SRC executives to provide students with a full update of their administration as they approve funds for them to work.

“The purpose of today’s sitting is to invite the SRC Executives to come and account to the general student body of the Bolgatanga Technical University. They owe the students the duty of accountability. Because they appeared before parliament a couple of months ago, requesting that the student parliament approve a certain amount to carry out their activities. As future leaders, we don’t want to jeopardize our credibility, so we are inviting them to come and give us an up-to-date record of how they led this particular year’s SRC administration,” he said.

Delivering his address, the SRC President, Abdulai Anabila Seidu, highlighted some achievements made so far, such as the successful printing of SRC books for all students and the construction of the SRC secretariat, among others.

He said, “Mr. Speaker, if you could recall, in January this year we brought a budget before parliament for approval which included printing of exercise books. Upon the approval of that budget, I am here to account to you that the SRC has successfully printed and distributed 7,000 exercise books to students across all levels and departments, ensuring that every student had access to this essential learning resource. Notably, the Bukere campus was included in this initiative, highlighting our commitment to serving all students.”

The SRC President also said, “Procurement of Blocks and Building Materials for SRC Secretariat Project: Mr. Speaker, earlier in April, procurement of blocks and building materials for the continuation of the SRC secretariat project was made, which showcases our dedication to improving infrastructure on campus. Currently, work is ongoing at the site, reflecting progress and development within the organization.”

The sitting, which lasted about two hours, was characterized by intense debate and constructive criticism. In the end, the SRC executives were tasked by the assembly to work hard and meet the needs of the students. The Speaker of the Assembly, Duut Stephen, while speaking to the media, challenged other universities to hold student leaders accountable for their stewardship.
