A Level 200 Public Health student of the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), Hanatu Aninya Anyagri, is hoping to become the first female Student Representative Council (SRC) President for the institution.
Speaking to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Equal Voices, Sunday, July 14, 2024, Ms. Anyagri explained that since childhood, she’s always been a leader.
Recounting growing up in Garu, Ms. Anyagri explained that she has always contested the class prefect position and won. When she moved to Navrongo to attend the Navrongo Senior High School, she ran and became the Head Girl Prefect.
While serving as Girls’ Prefect, she was able to work towards securing a permanent office for all girls’ prefects. Additionally, her eloquence and articulation caught the attention of many of the teachers and management members of the school.
These experiences, Ms. Anyagri said, have prepared her for the role of leading students at the tertiary level.
“When I got to CKT-UTAS, I think in my first week, I don’t know how the current administration got to hear about me, I was there and they sent me an official letter to appoint me as part of the audit committee. I saw that as an opportunity and a platform to know more about myself. It was not easy.”
“With this, I quickly realized that there was a lot to do. Basic things that the students needed were being overlooked. I told myself that if wherever I find myself I take up leadership roles, then CKT-UTAS should not be an exception,” she said.
Since declaring her intention, she has met countless opposition not because she is incompetent but because she is a woman and the thought is that she cannot lead. These criticisms, she maintained, would however not deter her from seeing the task through.
While admitting that elections are financially demanding, she has received some goodwill from those interested in her journey.
Ms. Anyagri hopes to deal with basic issues like expanding toilet facilities and access to them on campus. She again mentioned that she hopes to make students and lecturers more comfortable in the lecture halls by fixing broken fans.
