Stevo Atambire: Blending tradition with environmental consciousness in music

Stevo Atambire, a popular musician from the Upper East Region, is making waves not just with his music but also with his environmentally conscious approach to his craft.

The artist, known for his use of the traditional “kologo” instrument, has chosen to use a metal version of this guitar-like instrument instead of the traditional calabash-based one, citing both performance benefits and environmental concerns.

“The metal kologo is best for the stages I perform on and also reduces waste in the environment, which makes my music stand out,” Stevo explained during a conversation on the Day Break Upper East show.

He added that for the used glue can, he can play music without having to skin an animal as is done for use for the traditional kologo guitar.

This decision highlights his commitment to blending traditional music with modern environmental sensibilities.

The kologo, traditionally made with a calabash, two nylon strings, and animal skin, is central to Stevo’s unique sound. Through this instrument, he has traveled around the world, sharing his music and cultural heritage.

Stevo noted that summer is the best time for professional music artists, as people take breaks from work to entertain themselves. He performs at various shows during his tours, arranged by a booking agent who applies for festival appearances on his behalf.

When asked about how Europeans enjoy his music despite not understanding the language, Stevo responded saying, “Music is a universal language.” He elaborated that language should not be a barrier in music, drawing from his own childhood experience of singing songs in languages he didn’t speak.

“It’s not just about the language but the rhythm, and using your own indigenous instruments to make modern music is unique. That’s what the world needs,” he added.

Atambire emphasized the importance of hard work and perfecting one’s craft to attract investors. With over 15 years of experience in his career, he expressed openness to mentoring hardworking young musicians with vision.

The “Dikebo” hit singer concluded by revealing that his lyrics are inspired by his connection to nature, further underlining his environmental consciousness.

This approach of combining traditional instruments, global appeal, and environmental awareness showcases Stevo’s innovative contribution to the music industry and his commitment to sustainability.
