A semi-detached dormitory block for the Bayala and Ajene Houses in the Bolgatanga Senior High School has been renovated by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
Built decades ago, the dormitory block had deteriorated over the years and had never undergone a major facelift.
The roof leaked whenever it rained, soaking books and personal belongings of the students. Loose wiring posed a safety hazard, and broken windows allowed miscreants to enter and steal items when students were in class. These issues made the dormitory an unsafe and uncomfortable place for students to live in.
Recognizing the urgent need for renovation, the PTA took it upon themselves to address these challenges. The renovation included re-roofing the dormitory block, rewiring to ensure electrical safety, replacing the ceiling, doors, and louvers, and painting the entire structure. The dormitory has also been furnished, providing a comfortable living environment for the students at a cost of GHC 148,550.00.
During the handover ceremony, the PTA Chairman, Leonard Anafu, expressed gratitude to all the parents and stakeholders who contributed to the renovation project.
“The PTA has constructed two 10-seater micro-flush toilet facilities in collaboration with Rotary Club, one each for male and female students respectively. The PTA had undertaken renovation works on the school canteen that houses the Guest House of the school. The renovation was done to give a facelift to the structure which had been severely affected by lack of repair. The structure was painted and furnished with fifty chairs, thirty tables, a deep freezer, and a DSTV satellite package for the canteen. The three rooms in the facility were equally renovated by painting and furnished with curtains, beds, and necessary bedding to accommodate guests of the school in dignity,” he stated.
According to Mr. Anafu, the Association has also been extending financial support to the school whenever it becomes critically necessary, especially for feeding, the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), and many other areas. The headmaster of Bolgatanga Senior High School, Anthony Adimazoya, lauded the PTA for their dedication and commitment to improving the school’s infrastructure.
“Your support and encouragement have always been a pillar of strength for our institution, and we are truly honored to have you here. To our esteemed P.T.A., I say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of our students have borne fruit in the form of this beautifully renovated dormitory block. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when parents, teachers, and the community work together with a shared vision and purpose,” Mr. Adimazoya stated.
Mr. Adimazoya appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to come to their aid to renovate some dilapidated structures including the dining hall, classroom blocks, laboratories, and teachers’ quarters. He entreated the students to take good care of the renovated dormitory block and to use it as a stepping stone towards achieving greater heights in their educational journey.
Some of the students expressed their joy and relief and thanked the PTA for renovating the dormitory block. “We used to dread the rainy season because our belongings would get soaked, and it was very uncomfortable. Now, we feel safe and happy to live in a clean and well-maintained dormitory,” said Akufo Desmond, a house member of Bayala House.
The Assemblyman for the Winkogo electoral area, Edward Azuah, commended the school for the cordial relationship the community and the school enjoy.
