The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has strongly condemned the recent attack and burning of a vehicle belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Binduri constituency. The incident, which took place between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm, saw three masked men set ablaze a vehicle with registration number GX 4164 – 17 at the residence of Samuel Ayaago, the NPP constituency chairman.

The attack, which many believe was politically motivated, targeted a vehicle that prominently displayed the image of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer. Dr. Bin Salih, who visited the scene of the attack yesterday, expressed his outrage and concern over the violent act. He announced that the Regional Security Council had directed the police to apprehend the perpetrators within 48 hours.

“All of us, the people of this constituency, the people of the Upper East Region, and Ghanaians must condemn this act. It is unacceptable. We have seen what happened and we want to tell the perpetrators that if it is their intention to scare people, then they have failed. Because we are going to do everything within our means to ensure that within 48 hours, the perpetrators are identified and arrested.”

The minister stated that information available to him indicates that the assailants’ action is an attempt to intimidate and discourage supporters from welcoming Dr. Bawumia, who is scheduled to visit the region and Binduri on July 30th.

“I’m told that yesterday’s incident is because some persons have heard that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will be coming here, so they want to engage in acts of this nature so as to scare people from coming out in their numbers to welcome him to this constituency. They have failed. Nobody can stop any politician from operating. Our democracy has gotten to a point that no politician can be intimidated,” he stated.

Dr. Bin Salih called on all political parties and their supporters to remain peaceful and refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions further. He urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and provide any information that could aid in the swift resolution of the case.

The Member of Parliament for Binduri, Abdulai Abanga, suspects the attack was carried out by individuals associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We are not surprised about this issue because we were expecting that something like this would happen due to the audio and radio threats we have been receiving. Last week, we had a party program where we brought the party women executives to a meeting. It was a joyous occasion and the women were excited and composed nice music about voting for Abanga and Bawumia. That music went viral and after that, we received a series of audios threatening to kill the women, threatening to attack us. So I was not surprised at all. And to be frank, from the leadership of the NDC in this constituency, from the PC, the Chairman, the old Chairmen, all their leadership, anytime they have an opportunity to go to the radio, they will not stop associating the party [NPP], the government to the Bawku conflict. And they say that anybody that wears Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s T-shirt should not be allowed to roam in the Kusaug area,” he alleged.
