The Upper East Regional Communications Director, Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, has expressed dismay over the burning of a pickup belonging to the NPP Binduri constituency office.
He labelled it as barbaric, emphasising that no one should cower in fear because of their support for a specific political actor. He stressed that the attack was a violation of fundamental rights.
“It is not wrong for anybody to belong to any of the political parties. It is their fundamental human right to decide which political party they want to join. So for people to take the law into their hands, for people to begin to behave in an awkward manner, it is unacceptable in our country today.”
Highlighting alleged prior warnings from opposition members, Mr. Ayamga suggested a link between these warnings and the recent attack, implying that such incidents are indicative of hostility from political opponents. He underscored that these warnings originated from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We can only point to one fact. And that fact is that we have had a series of warnings from members of the opposition party. We have several people that were warned; we have received audio messages warning individuals in the Bawku Area that if they do not desist from supporting His Excellency the Vice President, they will have themselves to blame.”
“So if things like this happen and you get up one morning or one evening and your party vehicle is put to ashes, what else do you need to conclude that the perpetration is coming from your opponent?” he added.
Assuring the public, Mr. Ayamga mentioned that the police are actively investigating the matter to apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the attack. Despite the severity of the incident, he reported that Samuel Ayaago, the chairman and victim of this attack, is in good condition.
He also urged community members with any information regarding the perpetrators to cooperate with law enforcement, emphasising the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
The NPP is expected to release an official statement today regarding the incident.
