Jemilatu Mumuni Fuseini, a nursing officer with the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Directorate, has warned that because the mosquitoes responsible for transmitting dengue fever, Aedes aegypti, are active both day and night, residents must wear protective clothing at all times, use repellents, desilt drains, and cover all containers containing water.
In recent discussions on A1 Radio, Madam Fuseini explained that dengue fever’s symptoms can often be mistaken for those of other illnesses, leading many to self-medicate with painkillers instead of seeking prompt medical attention.
“The signs and symptoms are not distinct from those of other conditions. That’s why, when people experience these signs and symptoms, they might buy painkillers, thinking it will alleviate their headache. So, they don’t take it seriously,” she said, noting that key symptoms to watch for include nausea, vomiting, headache, joint and muscle pain, sore throat, and extreme fatigue.
In more severe cases, individuals may experience severe abdominal pain, bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, blood in the urine, or difficulty breathing.
She emphasized that early detection is crucial, as not all symptoms need to be present to warrant a visit to a health facility. Prompt medical intervention can prevent the disease from progressing to a severe stage, which can be life-threatening. “If you have these signs and symptoms, it’s important to seek early detection and treatment. It’s better than staying at home. Visit the nearest health facility; we can detect and treat it early to prevent it from advancing to a severe stage, which might cause death.”
She also outlined preventive measures such as using insecticide-treated mosquito nets, wearing protective clothing, avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, and using mosquito repellents. Eliminating stagnant water and clearing vegetation can also help reduce mosquito breeding sites.
She clarified that every healthcare facility is prepared to manage dengue fever with supportive care, including pain relief and fluid replacement.
If symptoms arise, individuals are encouraged to seek medical care immediately for early detection and treatment.
Maintaining vigilance and taking preventive steps are essential in combating the dengue fever outbreak and safeguarding public health, she advised.
