Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP presidential candidate, has pledged to prioritize the construction of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project if elected in the December polls.
Speaking at a rally in Bolgatanga to conclude his constituency connect tour in the North, Dr. Bawumia assured supporters that the long-awaited project, which has been stalled for nearly five years, will finally come to fruition under his leadership.
The sod-cutting ceremony for the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam took place on November 29, 2019, officiated by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Bawumia, and attended by the Paramount Chiefs of Talensi and the Mamprugu traditional area.
The project was initially slated for completion within 50 months, aiming to alleviate the recurring flooding in northern Ghana caused by the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. Additionally, the dam was intended to provide a reliable water source for year-round farming and electricity generation.
However, despite these ambitious plans, the project remains incomplete, leaving residents without the expected benefits. Addressing the crowd in Bolgatanga, Dr. Bawumia expressed his commitment to completing the project. In addition to his promise to finish the dam, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to construct an airport in the Upper East Region.
“I want to construct the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project. I will ensure its completion. Under my administration, the Bolgatanga Airport will also be constructed,” he said.
As part of his agricultural transformation agenda, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans to establish district mechanization centers, providing farmers with access to tractors and other essential equipment for ploughing. He also proposed creating an agricultural enclave at the Tono Irrigation Scheme to enhance productivity and support local farmers.
