Former President Mahama criticizes Akufo-Addo’s attempt to rewrite Ghana’s history

Former President John Mahama has expressed his disappointment over President Akufo-Addo’s recent Founders’ Day address, accusing him of attempting to rewrite Ghana’s history.

Speaking during his National Campaign Tour in the Bolgatanga East Constituency, Mr. Mahama criticized Akufo-Addo and his team for their portrayal of historical events.

“You can’t rewrite the history of Ghana for us,” Mr. Mahama stated firmly.

He acknowledged the contributions of many individuals to Ghana’s independence but emphasized that only one figure stands out in history.

Drawing a parallel with South Africa, he remarked, “Like South Africa, of course, Nelson Mandela is their founder.”

Mr. Mahama stressed that Ghana’s history is well-known and will be adhered to, implying that any attempts to alter it would be futile.

“We all know the history and will follow our history. When we are elected as president, I promise you, we will reset all,” he added.

His comments come in response to what he perceives as a revisionist narrative being promoted by Akufo-Addo, particularly concerning the role of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in opposing Ghana’s independence.

Mahama reminded the gathering that members of the UGCC, of which Akufo-Addo is a part, were historically against Ghana’s quest for independence.

“The very people who opposed our independence back then, and even went ahead to petition the Queen of England, the UGCC members Akufo-Addo is a member of, were opposed to Ghana being an independent state. So, he can’t come and rewrite history,” Mr. Mahama asserted.
