Former President and Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, promised to build a state-of-the-art sports stadium in the capital of the Upper East Region if elected as president. He made this promise a few days ago during his tour in the Upper East Region.
“A modern sports stadium for Bolgatanga because in sports you can create jobs. We must have a modern stadium where they can practice and realize their full potential,” Mahama said in the Upper East Region.
However, the Former President told reporters on Sunday, July 7th, that he cannot promise a new stadium under the current economic crisis.
He therefore admitted that promising a new stadium if he wins power is not feasible given the current economic situation.
“In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he revealed.
Mr. Mahama, the former president, is set to face competition from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2024.
As it stands, the Borteyman Sports Complex and the University of Ghana Stadium are the nation’s two standardized sports venues.
The country lacks a FIFA-standard football pitch, with the five national stadiums in a state of disrepair, including the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale.
