Software engineer Louis Marie Atoluko Ayariga says the IT space is an inclusive domain open to all, regardless of their background. Mr. Ayariga, however, admitted that significant work remains to be done to encourage more women to enter the tech field.

He spoke on A1 Radio’s Equal Voices program in light of this year’s International Youth Day theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.”

Discussing the dynamic nature of technology careers, Mr. Ayariga explained that working in tech often involves engaging with diverse fields, including healthcare, construction, and more. This interdisciplinary approach can sometimes seem daunting, but he reassured that the perceived difficulty often comes down to one’s approach and mindset.

“We, as techies, don’t stay in one place for a long time. After two or three years, we move to another field. So, if you’re in a hospital, you need to think like the doctors do, and then you move to construction and have to learn about that. That is one of the things that make people think it’s difficult, but I honestly think it’s not.”

He stressed the importance of staying focused, relying on trusted information sources, and building strong fundamentals to navigate the evolving tech landscape. “Some of the things that come out are really unnecessary. So, you need to find a trusted source for your information.”

He stated that creating tech communities plays a significant role in this process, offering support and reinforcing the message that technology is not exclusive to men but accessible to everyone.

Mr. Ayariga also pointed out that success in tech is not driven by financial incentives alone. Instead, he encouraged aspiring tech professionals to first secure jobs that provide income and then prepare to learn in the tech field. “You don’t go into tech just for the money. It won’t work. You need to get your job first, earn, and then go home to learn and prepare to enter tech.”

Furthermore, he underscored the need for women to assert themselves and actively pursue their goals in technology. While supportive communities are essential, individual determination and self-advocacy are key to overcoming barriers and achieving success in the tech industry. “The community has to be there, but if women do not understand and stand up for themselves and pursue what they want, they won’t go far,” he said.
