Former Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Vitus Azeem, has voiced strong disapproval of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 manifesto, particularly for its failure to propose concrete measures to combat corruption.
Mr. Azeem, who has been a staunch advocate for transparency and accountability in governance, highlighted the shortcomings of the manifesto during an interview on A1 Radio.
The campaigner expressed disappointment that despite the NPP’s emphasis on good governance in their campaign rhetoric, their manifesto lacks a detailed strategy to address corruption—a critical issue in Ghanaian politics. He criticized the NPP for relying on superficial measures, such as reducing the number of ministers, which he argues does not address the root causes of corruption.
“Good governance cannot be achieved simply by cutting down on the number of ministers. Without a solid plan to tackle corruption, these promises are merely symbolic,” Azeem stated.
He further took aim at the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for failing to outline how his administration would address corruption within the current government. Mr. Azeem pointed out that there has been no clear strategy for dealing with individuals implicated in corrupt activities, leaving many concerns unaddressed.
“The current administration has faced various allegations of corruption, and there is no indication from Dr. Bawumia on how these issues will be managed if he assumes office,” he noted.
