The Upper East Regional Director of Communications, Peter Ayinbisa, has disclosed that as part of the government’s District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), 30 people will be employed in each district.
This means that a total of 450 people will be employed across the 15 districts and municipalities in the region.
He spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
“30 people have been selected in each district. They have received proper training because these are not ordinary equipment; specialized training is required. 450 jobs have been created immediately.”
“That is why, when we mentioned 2.1 million jobs during the launch of our manifesto, people were surprised, but this is it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ayinbisa explained that through community engagement by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the current NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the condition of community roads has consistently been identified as a top priority.
“When we travel around the country, the complaints have been about the poor condition of our roads. If you listened carefully to our manifesto, our leader highlighted three main concerns: the cost of living, employment, and the condition of roads.”
It will be recalled that the Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, launched the programme in the region. A total of 117 road construction equipment items are to be distributed among 15 districts and municipalities.
According to the Regional Director of Communications, assemblies will cover the cost of the equipment through deductions from their shares of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).
The equipment includes motor graders, backhoes, rollers, wheel loaders, bulldozers, tipper trucks, concrete mixers, and water tankers, which will enable the assemblies to undertake various road construction and maintenance projects. This is expected to enhance connectivity, facilitate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for residents in the region.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, during the inspection of the equipment, expressed excitement about the development, stating that the equipment would help address the region’s longstanding road infrastructure challenges. Dr. Bin Salih emphasized that the DRIP programme is a key initiative to bridge the infrastructure gap and stimulate local economic development.
