Rev. James Awuni, Chairperson of the Upper Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, has called for peace to be at the forefront of all political activities as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.
Speaking at the elevation ceremony of the Bolgatanga-East Presbyterian Church to District status, Rev. Awuni questioned the true meaning of development if it is pursued in the absence of peace, emphasizing that peaceful coexistence is crucial for the nation’s progress.
Addressing the congregation, Rev. Awuni highlighted that while political parties may have different philosophies and approaches to national development, their ultimate goal is the same: to improve the economy and ensure a better life for all Ghanaians.
He urged citizens to appreciate the diversity of political ideologies and refrain from allowing these differences to lead to conflict or violence.
“If you listen to the message of all the political parties, their goal is to develop the nation and improve the economy so that people can have a better life, albeit with different philosophies. The fact is that all of us cannot think the same way. Some will support the NDC, and others the NPP, and that should not be an issue that brings conflict and death to us. We are the same people, and therefore we must appreciate each other’s ideologies so that we go into the election with peace,” Rev. Awuni stated.
Rev. Awuni further emphasized the importance of maintaining peace before, during, and after the elections, stressing that peace is a non-negotiable element for the nation’s stability and growth.
“We are having a peace campaign, and the focus is on peace. As the Chairperson of the Upper Presbytery, I stand for peace, and everybody should stand for peace so that before, during, and after the election, Ghana remains peaceful,” he declared.
On the occasion of the Bolgatanga-East Presbyterian Church’s elevation to District status, Rev. Awuni expressed optimism that this milestone would not only foster spiritual growth but also bring about significant development in the community.
Rev. Nayo-Zacchaeus, who will lead the newly elevated District Church, assured the congregation of his commitment to winning more souls for the church. However, he also acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly in terms of accommodation and resources, including the need for funds to support the brand-new motorbikes provided to the church.
The event highlighted both the church’s commitment to spiritual and community development and its firm stance on promoting peace as the nation gears up for a critical electoral period.
