A total of 450 drivers and machine operators are currently undergoing intensive training in Bolgatanga as part of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). This initiative, aimed at enhancing road infrastructure across the Upper East Region, involves participants from all 15 district assemblies in the region.

The trainees, consisting of 30 individuals from each assembly, are receiving both theoretical and practical instruction on how to operate a variety of heavy machinery and equipment.

The Upper East Region has recently received a significant boost in its road construction and maintenance capabilities, with the acquisition of 117 pieces of equipment. These include 15 backhoes, 15 tipper trucks, 15 motor graders, 15 graders, 15 water tankers, 15 rollers, 6 wheel loaders, 3 bulldozers, 3 lowbeds, and 30 concrete mixers. The equipment, facilitated by the Jospong Group of Companies, is set to enhance the region’s ability to carry out road improvements efficiently.

This comprehensive training, which spans two days, is organized by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies. Nana Agyemah Aikens Asuako, Technical Manager with Zoomlion Ghana and Lead Trainer for the DRIP project for the Upper East and North East regions said the drivers and operators will undergo training on the checklist system of the equipment, safety precautions, and maintenance to avoid accidents and damages. He admonished them saying that the equipment are modern types, equipped with renewed features including the telematic system to track the movement and usage of the equipment.

Osman Musah, Regional DRIP Coordinator, Upper East, lauded the government for the initiative saying it will enhance road networks in the region to ensure access from one community to another. According to him, the project would provide jobs for youth to reduce the number of unemployed youth in the country.

He assured that the “equipment will be used for its purpose and that is for road networks. It is not for farming or galamsey activities”
