The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has expressed deep concern over the perception that politicians seek power primarily for personal gain rather than for the development of their constituencies or the nation.
He attributed this growing sentiment among Ghanaians to the actions and inactions of the Akufo-Addo-led government over the past seven to eight years.
In an interview on A1 Radio, Dr. Apaak stated, “For good reason, even I am sometimes disappointed because the governance we have witnessed in the past few years has clearly accentuated the feeling that political officeholders are not there for the benefit of the people but for their own benefit. This is very dangerous.”
He emphasized that it is the responsibility of political leaders to demonstrate to the electorate that they are committed to public service and not personal enrichment.
Dr. Apaak highlighted the need for a reset in leadership, stressing that the current trajectory is unsustainable.
He said, “We need to recalibrate and present leadership in a way that assures the people that their mandate is not being sought for the benefit of a few individuals or their families and friends.”
According to him, the failures of the past years have deepened the public’s disillusionment with political leaders, making it imperative to restore trust.
He pointed to specific instances, such as the government’s unfulfilled promise to construct the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, where he alleged that close to $12 million was paid to contractors with no visible progress.
Dr. Apaak argued that such actions only serve to reinforce negative perceptions about political leaders, making it crucial for the next administration to correct these wrongs and rebuild confidence in governance.
He further emphasized that the NDC’s 2024 manifesto is centered around the need to “reset” the country and rebuild the trust that Ghanaians once had in their leaders.
He argued that only the NDC is capable of restoring this trust, which has been eroded under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
“The NPP has contributed to Ghanaians losing trust due to the corrupt acts of Akufo-Addo’s appointees,” Dr. Apaak stated.
