Some classrooms at Bolgatanga Experimental Primary School in the Upper East Region have been transformed into smoking and toilet areas by unknown individuals.
Upon entering the classrooms, one is met with a heavy, unpleasant stench from human excrement.
According to the Headmistress, Mercy Yamtot, this situation has been recurring. She notes that miscreants break into the classrooms at night to smoke, and after smoking, defecate in the rooms. They also damage the furniture before leaving the premises, she indicates.
Mrs. Yamtot blames the situation on the lack of functioning lighting and security systems in the school. Despite numerous appeals for assistance in installing burglar-proof windows and repairing furniture, no significant support has been received.
“I have written several letters to individuals and organizations alike, but no significant support has come through,” she adds.
Although the Parent Teacher Association recently contributed by installing 14 burglar-proof windows, there are still 48 windows and 6 doors that need to be secured to address the problem effectively. Last year, Municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga also presented 15 dual desks, but this aid has proven insufficient to address the furniture deficit.
Mrs. Yamtot fears that the situation may worsen if left unaddressed. Many windows and pieces of furniture in the classrooms have been damaged.
Therefore, she is calling on alumni, organizations, and the government to assist the school by providing additional furniture, securing the remaining windows, and repairing classroom floors.
