Moses Abaah Apiah of A1 Radio has been recognized as the Best Reporter for Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) and the Most Promising Journalist of the Year at the 3rd Upper East Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards. His award-winning stories highlighted critical issues in local communities, resulting in tangible improvements.
One of Mr. Apiah’s standout reports covered the water scarcity issue in the Asongi-Kunkua community within the Bolga East District. His investigation revealed that community boreholes had been abandoned since 2019. His coverage drew attention to the problem, prompting Member of Parliament Dr. Akuritinga to intervene and provide a new borehole for the community. “I carried out the story, and fortunately, the MP for the area, Dr. Akuritinga, came to the rescue and provided a new borehole for the people.”
Another notable story by the awardee focused on the water storage challenges faced by students at Our Ladies of Law School in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality. On A1 Radio’s *Daybreak Upper East* show, Mr. Apiah highlighted the severe difficulties students faced in accessing water for their daily needs. “I learned that the students at Our Ladies of Law School in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality were struggling with water storage. Given their number, it was challenging for them to access water for bathing and attending classes. I decided to follow up and seek support for the students.”
This story led to significant support from the producers of Acquabolg Mineral Water, who donated a 1,000-litre polytank, and an NGO that drilled a new borehole for the school. “Fortunately, after covering the story, Acquabolg Mineral Water provided a 1,000-litre polytank, and an NGO drilled a new borehole for the students.”
Mr. Apiah expressed that being named the Most Promising Journalist of the Year brings additional responsibility and motivation to further enhance his work. He underscored his commitment to leveraging this recognition to deepen his journalistic impact and engage in new collaborations.
He noted that the sponsors of the WASH category have already expressed interest in working closely with him on future projects, and he is eagerly anticipating these new opportunities. “Being named Most Promising Journalist adds a greater burden on me. It means I have to demonstrate my commitment to the work and continue learning. After the awards, the sponsors of the WASH category reached out to express their interest in collaborating on future projects. I’m looking forward to this collaboration and am already following up on a few things. I hope to come out with another compelling piece soon, and I pray for continued support,” he added.
