A group of concerned members of the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the Upper East Region has petitioned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, calling for the annulment of the election results from the party’s National Congress held on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

The petitioners allege the election process was marred by fraud and irregularities.

“The election was fraudulent in the sense that the date which was slated for this congress to take place was rather Tuesday, September 10, which is today. This was done by certain elements of the party who thought they could condone and connive with the commission to cheat their other contestants who had better chances of winning positions within the contest than them.”

The Upper East Regional Secretary of the PNC, Peter Akunlibe, who is also the party’s parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga Central and led members of the party to present a petition to the regional office of the EC, said certain party elements allegedly conspired with the Electoral Commission to shift the date without informing all delegates.

He alleges further that only delegates who were reportedly aligned with certain candidates were made aware of the new date, giving them an unfair advantage.

The petitioners also claim that elections in the Upper East Region began unusually late at 4:30 p.m., while other regions like Western and Western North were unaware that elections were even taking place.

Additionally, the group states that “the purported person who claims to have won the flagbearership race was announced disqualified by the party disciplinary committee a few days prior to their September 7 event and therefore could have no chance of contesting any elections with the PNC party anymore.”

The petitioners are requesting that the results be annulled and a re-election be held to ensure transparency and fairness in line with the party’s principles. Bernard Mornah emerged victorious in the flagbearer contest for the People’s National Convention (PNC), held on September 7, 2024, at the UDS Guest House in Accra and supervised by the Electoral Commission of Ghana. He secured a resounding victory with 1,138 votes while his opponent, David Apasera, managed to obtain 216 votes.

The Upper East Regional Director of the EC, Williams Obeng Adarkwa, who received the petition on behalf of the Chairperson, Jean Mensa, pledged to forward their petition to the headquarters for redress.
