Over the years, Taekwondo has been the sporting discipline that has won the most laurels for the Upper East Region, but it has received less attention compared to other sports.
The team has participated in the Korean Ambassador’s Cup numerous times and has consistently won medals for the Upper East Region.
Due to a lack of training equipment and funds, the Upper East Regional Taekwondo team could not take part in this year’s Korean Ambassador’s Cup in Accra. All efforts made to secure funding proved futile.
In response to this call for support, Prof. Eugene Asola, based in the United States of America, has opted to send some used Taekwondo training equipment to the Upper East Regional Taekwondo team to help them train effectively. Prof. Asola, once a practitioner himself, now holds a Dan Black Belt and doubles as an instructor.
Jesse Apalazoya, a coach and administrator, said the association has lacked this equipment over the years, and when provided, it will go a long way to enhance effective training. He has experienced this both as a former practitioner and now as a coach.
The Upper East Regional Taekwondo team has been given the go-ahead to start effective training in selected senior high and technical schools in Bolgatanga, commencing on September 14, 2024.
