The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has fiercely criticized former President John Dramani Mahama, calling him a “lazy president” who failed to manage his time efficiently while in office.
Speaking at a press conference in Bolgatanga during the party’s Youth Connect event, Mustapha warned Ghanaian voters against repeating what he described as a mistake by voting for Mahama in the upcoming December 7th general elections.
“In fact, John Mahama was a lazy president,” Mustapha claimed. “He personally mentioned in an interview that he usually got to the office at 10 a.m. and left by 4 p.m. During his entire tenure as president, his cabinet met just about 40 times,” Mustapha stated.
According to Mustapha, civil servants at the presidency recounted stories of idleness and inefficiency during Mahama’s tenure, claiming that even the late Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur worked harder than his boss. “Amissah-Arthur reported to his office daily at 8 a.m. and worked through to 7 p.m.,” Mustapha noted, implying that this workload discrepancy reflected Mahama’s lack of commitment.
Mustapha also referenced Amissah-Arthur’s rumored intentions to challenge Mahama for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in 2018 before his sudden death, which Mustapha described as “mysterious.”
Acknowledging the current economic challenges facing Ghana, Mustapha was quick to defend the NPP’s track record.
“We know the cost of living has gone up, and there are ample economic difficulties in our country. These challenges are global, and we are all feeling them,” he said.
He compared Ghana’s economic resilience under the NPP to global economic struggles, notably in the United States.
Mustapha credited the NPP with steering Ghana through turbulent times, avoiding fuel shortages, keeping the lights stable, and increasing public sector employment.
He highlighted the achievements of the current administration, including the creation of over 2.1 million jobs, an unmatched infrastructure record, and a transformation of the digital space.
Mustapha praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership, aligning his vision with the future challenges and opportunities for the youth of Ghana.
He concluded by emphasizing that the NPP does not take the trust of Ghanaians for granted and urged continued support for the party.
