Sampson Asinga, a two-time contestant in assembly elections, and Godwin Adombila, a photographer and nephew of former Upper East Regional Minister Rockson Bukari, have defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The duo stated that they decided to switch sides because they found a protective shield under the NDC umbrella during a recent rally in the area led by the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah.
While announcing his defection to the NDC, Adombila referenced the relationship between the former and the latter, which did not sit well with his uncle, the former regional minister.
According to Mr. Bukari, his nephew was never a member of the NPP, asserting that Adombila has been aligned with the NDC since 2012.
Addressing the matter, Mr. Bukari recalled his own political journey, noting that during his 2012 campaign for the parliamentary seat in the Bolgatanga East Constituency, neither Adombila nor his father supported him, despite their familial ties. Instead, he revealed, they were openly backing Dr. Dominic Ayine, the NDC’s candidate at the time.
“He and his father never supported me in 2012 when I was campaigning as a parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga East, and I understood them. They were supporting Dr. Ayine. So, to say that he has now defected to the NDC is surprising because he has been with the NDC since 2012,” Bukari explained.
The former regional minister expressed disappointment that Adombila had chosen to use his name in the defection announcement, insisting that his family remains loyal to the NPP.
“Either way, he could have found a better way to gain political visibility within the NDC without necessarily adding my name, Rockson, to it, because each member of the Rockson family is for the NPP.”
Mr. Bukari, however, wished his nephew and the NDC well but offered a word of caution.
“All that I will say is I wish them well, but the NDC should be careful of people of such nature because they are opportunists,” he concluded.
