The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has called on residents of the Upper East Region, regardless of their region of origin, to uphold the peace enjoyed in the area as the December 7 general elections approach.
Dr. Hafiz made these comments at a function to reinaugurate the Upper West Union in the Upper East Region. Established in 1972, the Upper West Union has a clear vision to foster unity among its people, support community welfare, and preserve and promote the rich culture and heritage of the Upper West Region. The Union has been dormant in the Upper East Region since 2010, making its revival essential.
Addressing members of the Union in Bolgatanga on the theme “Unity for Progress, Celebrating Our Heritage, Building Our Future,” Dr. Bin Salih called for unity before, during, and after the general elections.
He said, “As residents in the Upper East Region, we must contribute to the region by being law-abiding. We should not be associated with any negative issues in this region. The bond between the Upper West Region and Upper East Region is deep-rooted and extends beyond our geographical boundaries. It is driven by our shared goals and belief in creating economic development by pooling our resources. So, as we look ahead, let us envision the Union as a facilitator for cultural events, training programs, and initiatives. Together, we will nurture, uplift, and promote local talent through mentorship. We are responsible for empowering the Union to achieve its goals in our lives. As for other parts of this Union, as you are very much aware, we are inching towards the December general elections. I want to entreat you not to allow partisan politics to divide us.”
The Chairman of the Upper West Union, Aatere Adamu Mahmud, pleaded with the Regional Minister to liaise with the central government to complete the Chuchuliga-Tumu-Wa Road to facilitate travel back home.
“I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the current government, under the leadership of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, for its unwavering commitment to improving road infrastructure leading to the Upper West Region from the Upper East Region. The efforts to fix and upgrade this critical route will not only enhance connectivity but also bring significant relief to our people who rely on this road for transportation, trade, and daily activities. We remain hopeful that these efforts will continue until the road network is fully completed, bringing lasting benefits to our communities and fostering economic growth in both the Upper West and Upper East Regions. Our appeal is that the Honorable Minister should use his good office to help get the old and dilapidated tarred road graded from Chuchuliga Junction to Nakong. We believe that when this is done, it will facilitate easy and smooth travel between the Upper East and Upper West Regions.”
Residents of the Upper West Region in the Upper East Region held a reinauguration program in Bolgatanga to revive the Upper West Union, fostering unity among its members and advocating for members’ welfare.
In attendance were Prof. David Millar, President of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary Studies; Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, Vice Chancellor of BTU; the Upper East Regional Minister; chiefs from the Upper West Region; representatives from BONABOTO; and various groups from both the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
The program was chaired by the Chief of Jaana, Kuoro Ndie Bennin Douro IX.
