Joel Isaka, a housemaster at Bolgatanga Sherigu Senior High School (SHS), has highlighted significant developments at the school, particularly the improvement in infrastructure.
He noted that the school now boasts adequate classrooms to accommodate all programs and year groups, providing students with a conducive learning environment.
In an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Isaka said past challenges with furniture shortages have been successfully addressed through support from the government and the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo. Additionally, the school now features a state-of-the-art Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratory, fully equipped with computers and other necessary tools to enhance digital learning.
“We have adequate classrooms now for all programs and all year groups. We also have enough chairs. Prior to this time, we were struggling with furniture, but now we have enough. The government has provided some, and our MP has also donated some. It’s sufficient, and some are even packed without being used. We also have an ultramodern ICT lab furnished with computers and everything,” he said.
Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS offers a diverse range of academic programs tailored to various student interests and career aspirations. The school provides courses in General Arts, Agricultural Science, Business, and Home Economics. Under the General Arts program, students can specialise in History, Government, Religious Studies, Geography, Elective Mathematics, and Economics.
The Business program includes Principles of Accounting, Cost Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, and Elective Mathematics. Agricultural Science students study Animal Husbandry, General Agriculture, Chemistry, and Elective Mathematics. The Home Economics department focuses on Management in Living, Clothing and Textiles, Food and Nutrition, and Chemistry.
The school has also been selected as one of two institutions in the Upper East Region to pilot the new curriculum, establishing it as a critical hub for educational innovation. Mr. Isaka noted that nearly all teachers have received training to deliver the new curriculum effectively, ensuring students are equipped with up-to-date and relevant knowledge.
“It is among the two schools selected from the region to pilot the new curriculum. So, if you’re looking for a place where your ward can truly understand the intricacies of this particular curriculum, the choice for you is Bolga Sherigu Senior High School,” he explained.
The school has also embraced new teaching methodologies, including Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), which focus on collaborative teaching and continuous improvement. This approach helps create a more dynamic and engaging learning experience for students.
Mr. Isaka further highlighted the school’s unique position as the only mixed secondary school within the municipality, offering a valuable option for families seeking quality education.
“I’ll say proximity is a key advantage because in the municipality, this is the only mixed secondary school,”* he said. He encouraged students seeking transfers, those without placements, and parents looking for an excellent school for their wards to consider Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS.
“If you’re a student who has been placed in a school you want to change, or you haven’t gotten placement, or you’re a parent looking for a school for your ward, we encourage you to choose Bolga Sherigu Senior High,” he urged.
