Bolgatanga Sherigu Senior High School, located in the Sherigu community, has made remarkable progress since its establishment nearly a decade ago.
Initially founded as a private institution in 2014, the school was created to address the pressing issue of school dropouts, particularly among youths affected by the adverse impacts of galamsey (illegal mining) activities.
Recognizing education as a tool to combat these challenges, the community came together to establish a school that would provide opportunities for their children.
Speaking on A1 Radio, the Dean of Discipline at Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS, Martin Azoko, recounted the school’s beginnings. He explained that community members mobilized resources to recruit volunteers, enabling the school to cater to students who had completed their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) but were unable to secure placements in other institutions.
“There were individuals in education raising funds to recruit volunteers, and at that time, they managed to enroll students who had written the BECE but could not secure placements. That’s how we got the initial group of students to start the school,” he said.
In 2018, the government officially absorbed Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS into the public education system, recognizing the critical role it played in addressing educational challenges in the area. Since then, the school has been under the leadership of three different headteachers and has experienced substantial growth. It now boasts 39 teaching staff and seven non-teaching staff members.
Mr. Azoko highlighted the school’s semi-boarding status, which accommodates around 300 out of its current enrollment of 464 students. “We have about 300 students living in our boarding facilities. Given the diversity of students coming from various regions, we consider ourselves a boarding school,” he explained. This arrangement reflects the broad catchment area the school serves, attracting students from far and wide.
Regarding academics, Mr. Azoko emphasized that Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS is well-prepared to implement the new SHS curriculum. He noted that the school combines strong community-driven values with modern educational opportunities, making it an excellent choice for parents seeking quality education for their children.
“For any parent looking for a reputable school for their ward, Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS is an excellent option. We are well-positioned to pilot the new curriculum and continue delivering quality education,” he assured.
Bolgatanga Sherigu SHS stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives, creating lasting impacts in education and providing hope for future generations.
