The President and Founder of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS), Prof. David Millar, has credited the establishment of the institute to the foresight and determination of his wife, Mrs. Lydia Mamata Millar. Speaking during the institute’s 10th anniversary and 6th graduation ceremony, an emotional Prof. Millar recounted how her unwavering efforts laid the foundation for the institution’s existence.
In a heartfelt tribute, Prof. Millar revealed how Mrs. Millar secured the parcel of land on which MITDS now stands. He recalled her persistent demands for remittances while he was studying in the Netherlands in the early 1990s—a request he initially resented.
“My wife is the reason for all this,” he said, his voice breaking with emotion. “She planned my retirement when she got this parcel of land. I remember while studying in the Netherlands, anytime I sent money home, she would insist on more. I was getting angry, but I did it anyway. When I confronted her about what she did with all the money I sent, she brought me to this parcel of land. My jaw dropped.”
Prof. Millar expressed deep gratitude for Mrs. Millar’s foresight, acknowledging it as the foundation of the institute’s success. “I want to say thank you for all this,” he concluded, wiping away tears amid applause from the audience.
