The General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) paid a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, on Monday, 16th December 2024.
Led by General Secretary Andrew Addoquaye Taggoe and National Chairman Michael Amoo-Gyasi, GAWU commended the Minister for his good leadership style in maintaining peace and order in the region.
The union also praised the minister’s handling of the crisis at the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions (ICOUR Ltd), where former Managing Director Benedict Bonaventure Aligebam has refused to leave office despite reaching the retirement age of 60.
The Regional Minister, Dr. Bin Salih, acknowledged ICOUR’s crucial role in the socioeconomic well-being of Ghanaians in the region, but noted that the institution has been in the news for the wrong reasons due to certain decisions that infringed upon the country’s rules.
According to the Regional Minister, the attempt to implement these decisions led to disturbances at ICOUR, which does not bode well for the institution’s growth. He urged the company’s workers and GAWU to unite behind the new Acting Managing Director, Charles Aboyella.
The Minister also revealed that Dr. Aligebam has taken the matter to court, but expressed optimism that the state will emerge victorious. Dr. Bin Salih noted that the former MD’s attempt to return to the company is untenable, as he lacks the support of the workers.
