The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Wisdom Ahadzi, has urged the incoming Upper East Regional Minister-Designate, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, to prioritize the development of the Vea Dam into a modern recreational facility.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Ahadzi emphasized the dam’s potential to boost local tourism, create jobs, and offer a vibrant entertainment hub for the region’s youth.

Ahadzi pointed out that the Vea Dam, located in the Bongo District, is already a natural tourist attraction, especially on Valentine’s Day, when hundreds of visitors flock to the site for leisure and picnics.

However, he noted that the lack of proper infrastructure and recreational facilities limits the dam’s potential to make a significant contribution to the local economy.

“The Vea Dam is a gem waiting to be polished. With the right investment, it can become a major tourist destination, attracting both local and international visitors,” Ahadzi stated.

The GTA Regional Director revealed that he has made several efforts to engage the Bongo District Assembly and other relevant agencies to develop the site into a well-equipped entertainment zone. However, he stressed that the project requires higher-level intervention and support to materialize.

“I have reached out to the Bongo Assembly and other stakeholders, but we need the backing of the Regional Minister to fast-track this initiative. This is not just about tourism; it’s about creating opportunities for our youth and driving local development,” he explained.

Ahadzi’s appeal comes as the region awaits the official assumption of office by Regional Minister-Designate Donatus Akamugri Atanga.

The proposed project aligns with the government’s broader agenda to promote tourism as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.

If realized, the Vea Dam recreational facility could serve as a model for similar initiatives across the country, leveraging natural resources to foster sustainable development.
