The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Wisdom Ahadzi, has highlighted the pivotal role that the Upper East Regional Airport will play in boosting tourism in the region once established.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Ahadzi emphasized that the establishment and operationalization of the airport will serve as a game-changer, addressing one of the most significant challenges faced by tourists: accessibility.

Despite the region’s rich cultural heritage and numerous tourist attractions, including the Paga Crocodile Pond, Tongo Hills, and Sirigu pottery, the lack of an airport has long hindered its tourism potential.

Mr. Ahadzi noted that visitors often face difficulties in reaching the region due to poor road networks and the absence of direct air travel.

“The airport will not only make the region more accessible but also open up opportunities for increased tourist arrivals, economic growth, and job creation,” he stated.

Mr. Ahadzi’s comments were made in connection with the assurance given by the Upper East Regional Minister-Designate, who pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to drive development in the area.

The GTA Director urged the incoming minister to prioritize the expansion and rehabilitation of the region’s road networks, which are critical to complement the airport’s impact.

“While the airport is a significant step forward, improving road infrastructure is equally important to ensure seamless connectivity between tourist sites and the airport,” he added.

The Upper East Region is renowned for its vibrant festivals, historical landmarks, and unique cultural experiences. However, the lack of adequate infrastructure has limited its ability to compete with other tourist destinations in Ghana.

The yet-to-be-established airport will position the region as a key player in Ghana’s tourism industry, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
