BONABOTO calls for decentralized health recruitment to address doctor shortage in Upper East Region

Stanley Abopam, the National Public Relations Officer for BONABOTO—a non-partisan association of citizens from Bolgatanga, Nangodi, Bongo, Tongo, and surrounding areas—is calling on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to reform their employment structure. His appeal comes amid concerns over the inadequate number of health professionals, particularly doctors, in the Upper East Region.

According to Mr. Abopam, the current system—where doctors are employed at the national level and then posted to regions—is inefficient. He suggests that recruitment should be conducted at the regional level, with specific vacancies in mind.

Speaking on A1 Radio following the vetting of Upper East Regional Minister-designate, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, Mr. Abopam argued that a decentralized approach to recruitment would help address the region’s alarming doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:24,124 and nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:313.

“I believe that the Ghana Health Service, and by extension the Ministry of Health, should adopt a targeted approach to recruitment. Instead of employing people in Accra and posting them here—only for them to leave—job vacancies should be advertised within the Upper East Region. Prospective applicants should go through the recruitment process at the regional health directorate, be appointed by the regional director, and be posted where their services are needed,” he explained.

In his contribution to the discussion, the Executive Director of the Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA), Bismark Adongo Ayorogo, urged residents of the Upper East Region to change their attitude towards health professionals from other regions. He noted that one of the key reasons doctors and other health workers leave the region prematurely is due to negative attitudes toward them.
