On February 13, 2025, Ghana joined the world in marking this year’s World Radio Day under the theme Radio and Climate Change.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Peter Abongo, Assistant Programs Officer at the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), highlighted the critical role individuals and communities play in safeguarding the environment. He emphasized the need for people to be mindful of their surroundings and take extra care in their daily activities, from managing fire safety to the proper use of electrical appliances. Prioritizing safety in these actions, he noted, would go a long way in protecting the environment from avoidable harm.
“Wherever you are, make sure you take good care of your surroundings,” he advised.
Mr. Abongo also outlined the EPA’s initiatives aimed at educating and sensitizing local communities to help them understand the environmental impact of their actions and how they can mitigate them.
“At the EPA, we conduct a lot of education and sensitization programs. We visit communities to educate them on environmental safety,” he said.
Addressing the issue of resource exploitation, he stressed the importance of responsible practices, particularly in industries such as mining. He noted that sustainable mining methods, including proper gold processing and land reclamation, are crucial for environmental protection.
“When it comes to resource exploitation, we have to do it responsibly,” he stated.
Mr. Abongo further highlighted the EPA’s involvement in the Ghana Landscape and Small-Scale Mining Project, which aims to restore degraded lands and support small-scale miners in adopting safer, more sustainable practices.
“The EPA is part of the Ghana Landscape and Small-Scale Mining Project. This project has two phases—one focuses on restoring degraded lands, while the other helps small-scale miners improve their operations for both environmental safety and their own well-being.”
He called on the general public to support efforts to protect the environment and make communities safer and healthier places to live.
“Everyone has a role to play in this,” he added.
